New Products, New Office, A lot of work!

Moving Cookie to the next step!

Growing a business is always difficult and uncertain. Over the past few months Cookie has had both of those times.

If you run your own business you’ll completely get what it feels like, sitting at your dining table in the evenings thinking about how you’re going to pay the bills this month. It’s at this point where you can either break or know that you have to just carry on having the faith in yourself that the business will start to grow.

I’ll admit since the last post I’ve been stuck in a rut where I just needed to get work done. The big problem with this is that in order to create the new products, expanding the offering from Cookie meant that design work that earn’t the money had to stop…. not a good thing when at the lowest point there was £12 in the bank! It was a bit of a double-edged sword. It was at this point I knew I needed help to get Cookie off the ground.

When I first launched the business I was super lucky to have a couple of offers from potential investors. However, I had always been a bit sceptical if I’m completely honest with you. But, it was one of those meetings I had in a local pub that stood out over the rest, so I went for it and now I have a business partner! For me, meetings that happen in a pub are always the best! This has massively changed behind the scenes of the business. I’ve now moved the business from my house to an old shoe factory in Melbourne, Derbyshire. I now have space for the super swanky new foiling machine (which is a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be!) and I now have an amazing new huge print press that has full-colour calibration and can duplex 450gsm stock… I know it’s nerdy but it just makes me go ‘Ooo’ every time I see it!

It all seems to have happened so quickly and I haven’t had the chance to take it all in properly yet. In the past few months, everything has changed for the better and if you’re reading this now you’ll know that the product offering from Cookie is now a lot bigger! I’ve gone from 10 products to 85 products. Which might not sound that many but there are some really nice new features on them. Such as, splitting the order across multiple designs, a variety of different foil colours on some products and having a much wider choice of stocks. It’s just a few clicks for you but it’s literally months of work from the backend.

The big benefit for me is that now everything produced from Cookie is done in-house. There are no trade printers you’re unaware of, everything is coming off the press here and I’m hand packaging each order – how nice is that! What does that mean for you? Well, firstly it’s quicker! Secondly, I can get good consistency across the print run. Nobody wants different colours every time you order some print! And thirdly, it’s cheaper! If you follow Cookie on Instagram hopefully you’ll have seen my post about the big business card price drop! During the update of the products, It was clear that with the new print press the cost to produce items such as laminated business cards was significantly less. I didn’t want to just pocket the difference, I wanted to pass this saving onto you! This means that now even the basics on shorter runs better value for you.

I will admit though, now that everything is up and running I’ve got a bit of shell shock that I can now go out and spread the word about Cookie. Not having the instant reaction that ‘there aren’t many products on there, but there will be soon’… It’s taken a lot of work to get to that point! I know there’s a lot of work and competition ahead of me but sometimes it’s nice to just stop and take a deep breathe and just relfect on what you’ve done so far. Do you agree?

So whats next? Well, I would like to get more content from professionals on here. From featured designers, to inspirational people who have had success in their industry. As well as creating more helpful content about print. The next big project is to start colaborating with designs to create amazing templates for customers to use. How does that sound? Is there something or someone who you would like to have featured on Cookie? Let me know in the comments!

As always, thank you for taking the time to read this, it means the world! Thank you for your time and see you next time!
